Fairfax County Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: What Should I Do If I Find a Nest Of Rodents In the Attic?

You've been hearing funny noises, especially at night, and finally tracked down the source of those noises to your attic. There you discovered a whole family of rodents have moved in and set up house. Now what are you going to do about it?

What Kind of Rodent?
What kind of rodent there is in your attic may have a bearing on what you do with them for removal. If they are mice or rats, you may want to consider killing them in some humane fashion. If they are squirrels, porcupines, or some other rodent that isn't considered quite so pesky, you should just do a catch and release.

Trapping
No matter what kind of rodent they are, you will need to exercise caution when trapping them. Rodents can carry a number of diseases, and they can bite. So you shouldn't try to catch them bare-handed. A live trap will be your best bet. Unless you put several live traps in your attic all at the same time, you will probably only get one or two at a time, making the trapping process a long and drawn-out one.

Other Devices
Depending on the size and number of rodents you've found living in your attic, you might just be able to take a container of some type—a bucket, a bushel basket, or a cardboard box—and try to sneak up on the critters and put the container over them. Then it will be kind of tricky to return the container to an upright position without the rodents getting away.

Points of No Return
After you have gotten the last critter out of your attic, you will want to examine the entire attic area and determine where all the holes, cracks, and crevices are. You will want to seal these up somehow so no rodent can ever get back in your attic. Most attics have some kind of vents in them, which you don't want to seal over. Instead, get a length of window screen and cover them completely. That way, you'll still get airflow through the attic, but the rodents won't be able to get back in. Be sure to cover every place that is a quarter of an inch in size or larger. Some small creatures can get through very tiny holes.

Alternatives
If you can't, or don't want to try to get rid of these pests yourself, your local pest control professionals can come out and do it for you.
